Distance Learning

Distance Learning
Welcome to distance learning at Valley City State University!
Our programs are perfect for individuals who don't have enough time to complete their degrees on campus. Courses are available online, through the Interactive Video Network (IVN), Face-To-Face in locations around North Dakota, and through Correspondence. We offer several options for full, bachelor's level programs that require little or no on-site presence.

Notice to Online Students

Due to individual state regulations, we are not able to accept applications for online coursework delivered to Alabama, Arkansas, and Maryland at this time. If you live outside of North Dakota, please check which programs are available to be delivered to where you live. Programs listed below with an asterisk (*) may include learning experiences that require additional authorizations in certain states that VCSU may not currently have.
Valley City State University’s nationally accredited education programs meet requirements for North Dakota teacher licensure. Although most states accept our teacher education program graduates for licensure, VCSU cannot confirm nor advise that education programs meet requirements for every state. Students seeking licensure in states other than North Dakota should contact the appropriate licensing board in the state in which they are pursuing licensure.

Why distance ed at VCSU?
People have lots of reasons for taking distance ed at VCSU. Some are looking to complete their degrees from the convenience of their homes; others are taking complete degree programs online - we have students from all across the United States! Many students are just looking for a cost-effective, convenient way to take a class that has always interested them.
How does it work?
This depends on the class and the media that the distance learning class uses:

Online classes use the Internet as the primary delivery mechanism, so the student can be located literally anywhere Internet access is available. Students can work with course materials at their convenience, or they can work collaboratively with other distance ed students.

Interactive Video Network (IVN) courses use a high quality compressed digital videoconference system that provides distance education opportunities to specially equipped locations across the state of North Dakota. IVN rooms are equipped with video cameras, TV monitors, microphones and other specialized telecommunication equipment to transmit live audio and video over leased T1 telephone lines. This connection provides a two-way audio and two-way video connection, so the instructor can interact with students exactly as if the class were being held in a traditional classroom.

Hybrid classes move a significant part of the coursework online, but leave some time in the traditional classroom.

"I am thankful that I found a university that has provided me with not only the education I needed but the academic and social networks that rounded out my collegiate experience. Just think, one side step and I may have ended up at another institution where I would have been a number and not a name and my higher educational experience would not have been so rewarding."
